Black Lines and Color Planes

A De Stijl-inspired study balancing straight black lines against red, blue, and yellow planes.

2-D design · Composition NC State Fall 2022
An abstract composition of straight black horizontal and vertical lines intersecting with red, blue, and yellow squares on a white background.

Situation

For a project in ADN 111, Introduction to Two-Dimensional Design, I was assigned to work with straight black lines combined with primary-color planes.

Task

Create a composition that honored that constraint while achieving a visually balanced, pleasing result.

Action

I worked from a few clear principles:

  • Geometric shapes: I used square shapes exclusively for the color planes to keep the geometry consistent.
  • Layering: I layered the shapes and lines to add depth and complexity to the composition.

Result

The final composition set horizontal and vertical black lines intersecting with red, blue, and yellow blocks, achieving the balanced, pleasing aesthetic the assignment called for.

With only squares and primary colors to use, the composition had to carry everything. Back to all work →
