Situation

As a class assignment, I was tasked with creating a mural for one of the exterior walls of Kamphoefner Hall, a building in NC State's College of Design. The objective was to emulate the style of a chosen artist.

Task

I chose Steve Wolf, drawn to the modern, intricate, and colorful nature of his work. My goal was to design a mural that incorporated elements reflecting NC State, landscape architecture, and the Raleigh area while staying true to Wolf's visual language.

Action

In developing the mural, I worked from a few principles inspired by Wolf's style:

  • Square structure: the composition is organized around square shapes for a cohesive framework.
  • Geometric and organic shapes: a blend of precise geometric forms and natural organic shapes adds visual interest.
  • Layering: multiple layers create depth and complexity.
  • Color scheme: predominantly NC State's colors.

Each square holds a pattern or image symbolizing the university and the Wolfpack, landscape architecture as the building's academic focus, or North Carolina and Raleigh. Specific motifs include an oak tree, acorn, and oak leaf, a nod to Raleigh's nickname, the City of Oaks, alongside Raleigh's official logo.

Result

The final mural blends Steve Wolf's style with symbols meaningful to NC State and the Raleigh community. The squares, the mix of geometric and organic shapes, the layering, and a color scheme drawn from NC State's palette create a piece that resonates with both the university and local culture.

Designing in Steve Wolf's style pushed me to be more deliberate with the symbols I chose. Back to all work →
